INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE
This is how the course is organized:
- Book → New Cutting Edge Pre-Intermediate (Modules 5, 6, 7 & 8).
- Course postponement. You can only postpone the course during the first day of class. You will not be able to do it after the first day of class. This type of request can be done by addressing a letter to the Language Institute Director and filling in a format at the reception desk. There will be no refunds.
- Attendance → Attendance is compulsory. This is a 40-hour course, and you are supposed to attend at least 36 hours. If you miss 8 or more hours of the course you will not be able to pass to the next level. This means that you can miss only one lesson (4 hours). If you miss 2 lessons (8 hours) or more, you fail the course. If you find yourself in the situation of failing the course because of absences, you can do two things:
§ Exhibit a medical excuse issued by your medical insurance ("EPS").
§ Take tutorials (COL$ 26,000 per hour) to make up for the lessons you missed. For example, if you missed 8 hours you will need at least a 2 hour tutorial to be able to take the exam. - Evaluation → You have to take 2 quizzes and 2 tests. The 2 tests are divided into 4 parts (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) and you will get a separate grade for each of these. To pass to the next level you need to get at least 3.6 as a final grade. However, if you get a grade between 3.4 and 3.5 you can take the re-take test. If you miss the final exam (for example, because you are sick), you can take the make-up test. In order to take the make-up test or the re-take test you have to pay a $33,000 fee. Nevertheless, you can take the make-up test free of charge, if you show a medical excuse issued by a recognized medical institution (e.g. your "EPS"). You have time to take the make-up test or the re-take test only until the end of cycle 8; after this, you will have to repeat the level. Each quiz and exam is worth a specific percentage of the final grade:
§ Quiz 1 → 15% (this grade includes the 2 compositions you are supposed to write during the course).
§ Quiz 2 → 15%
§ Mid-term Test (Day 9 – February 2nd, 2012) → 30 %, divided as follows: Listening → 7.5%; Reading → 7.5%; Writing → 7.5%; Speaking → 7.5%. The spoken production part of the speaking will be evaluated the day of the mid-term test; the spoken interaction grade will be based upon your overall speaking performance throughout the first 4 lessons.
§ Final test [Days 18 & 19 – February 15th, 2012 (Speaking) & February 16th, 2012 (Listening, Reading & Writing)] → 50%, divided as follows: Listening → 10%; Reading → 10%; Writing → 10%; Speaking → 10%. - Feedback → During the final lesson (February 17th, 2012), you will receive the course feedback and the receipt to continue onto the next level.
- Tutorials → Every students has a right to a maximum of three tutorials (1 hour each) free of charge, but only in case the teacher deems the student needs it, and provided that the student never missed a lesson.
- Resource Centre → You are strongly advised to use the Resource Centre (on the 3rd floor). There you will find some very useful tools (software, books, etc.) to help you during the learning process.
- Punctuality → The lessons start at 6.30 p.m. You have to be in the classroom by that time. If you are late, you will lose points off your quizzes' grades (0.1 points for each time you are late).
- Homework → Doing the assigned homework is a compulsory requirement. If you fail to fulfil it, you will lose points off your quizzes' grades (0.1 points for each time you don't do it).
- Mobile Phones → Mobile phones are to be switched off before the lesson begins. If you fail to do it and your mobile rings in the classroom, you will lose points off your quizzes' grades (0.1 points for each time your mobile phone rings).
- BLOG → You have to visit the blog for your level regularly. The link is on the menu on the left: English A2.2 (EVENING) - Feb. 2012 – Blog.
