INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE
This is how the
course is organized:
v
Book. New Cutting Edge Elementary (Modules 0, 1 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8). It
is compulsory to bring the book to the lesson. If the teacher becomes aware
that you didn't bring it, you will lose points off your quizzes grade (0.1
points for each time you don't bring the book).
v
Attendance. Attendance
is compulsory. This is an 80 hours course, and you are supposed to
attend at least 80% of the lessons. If you miss the 20% or more of the course you
will not be able to pass to the next level. This means that you can miss up to
15 hours. If you miss 16 hours (20% of the 80 hours) or more, you fail the
course. For an absence to be excused, you can do the following:
§ Exhibit a medical excuse issued by “Bienestar Universitario”.
§ Exhibit an excuse issued by your
department and signed by the department’s dean or academic coordinator.
§ If you miss a test and you want to
make up for it, the excuse must be exhibited within 5 working days from the
test administration.
§ Excuses must be exhibited at the
coordinator's office.
v
Evaluation. You have to take various quizzes (the exact number is up to the
teacher) and 3 tests. The 3 tests are divided into 4 parts: Listening,
Reading, Writing (L/R/W) and Speaking. The speaking part is divided
into two sections: Spoken Production (a brief interview with the teacher) and
Spoken Interaction (a brief dialogue with a classmate). To pass each test you
need to get at least a 3.0-grade. Each test is worth a specific percentage of
the final grade:
§ Quizzes à 15%
§ Test 1 à 25% (see dates above).
§ Test 2 à 30% (see dates above).
§ Test 3 à 30% (see dates above).
v
Feedback. After each test, you will receive the test feedback. On August 8,
2011, you will receive the feedback and the final grade.
v
Punctuality. The lessons start at 10 a.m. (groups D07/D08) and at 4
p.m. (group J02); on Mondays, group D08 starts the lesson at 11 a.m. and group
J02 at 3 p.m. The roll-call will be at 10.10 a.m. for groups D07/D08, and at
4.10 p.m. for group J02; on Mondays, the roll-call will be at 11.10 a.m. for
group D08, and at 5.10 p.m. for group J02 . If you arrive after the roll-call,
you will lose points off your quizzes grade (0.1 points for each time you are
late). The door will be closed at 10.15 a.m. (groups D07/D08) and 4.15 p.m.
(group J02); on Mondays, the door will be closed at 11.15 a.m. for group D08,
and at 5.15 p.m. for group J02. This
means that if you arrive after that time, you will not be able to enter the
classroom, and this will result into an absence (1 hour on Monday and 2 hours
on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).
v
Homework. Doing the assigned homework is a compulsory requirement. If you fail
to fulfil it, you will lose points off your quizzes
grade (0.1 points for each time you don't do it).
v
Mobile Phones. Mobile phones are to be switched off before the
lesson begins. If you fail to do it and your mobile rings in the
classroom, or if the teacher becomes aware that you are using it for any reason
or purpose, you will lose points off your quizzes grade (0.1 point for each
time your mobile phone rings).
v
BLOG. You
have to visit your group dedicated blog (D07/D08/J02) regularly. The
links are on the menu on the left ("D07 – Blog", "D08 –
Blog", "J02 – Blog"). Make sure you choose the correct group.
From time to time I will post texts and videos and you will have to comment on
them. Some of these assignments may be evaluated as quizzes. You can also use
it to check the assigned homework, so being absent will not be an acceptable
excuse for not doing it.
v
Quizzes Grade - Penalties and Rewards. At the end of the course the teacher
will calculate the number of penalties you accumulated and subtract it from
your quizzes grade (for example, if your quizzes grade is 5.0, and you
accumulated 5 penalties, it will become 4.5). It is possible to make up for a
maximum of four penalties. You can make up for a penalty doing an extra assignment
(for example, if you have three penalties, you will have to hand in three extra
assignments). For this to be valid, the extra assignment(s) must be handed in in
time (the teacher will set the deadline), and scored with a grade equal or
higher to 4.5. If you didn't
accumulate any penalties, or if you made up for all the penalties you
accumulated, you will be awarded a 0.5 points reward (for example, if your
quizzes grade is 4.5, it will become 5.0).
If you accumulated only one penalty, this will be forgiven, and no
points will be subtracted from your quizzes grade; in this case, however, you
will not be awarded the 0.5 points reward.
